Cockburn Town is the center piece of the island, with a wonderful selection of historic buildings and inns. The streets are lined with historic 18th and 19th century landmarks that reflect the Bermudan architecture of the salt and colonial eras. The Turks and Caicos National Museum is based on Grand Turk and is highly respected across the region. The central exhibit tells the story of the Molasses Reef wreck, the oldest European shipwreck to be discovered in the Western hemisphere (circa 1510). It also reveals the rich cultural and natural heritage of the islands.

Grand Turk has just completed a brand new airport of international standing. Just a short 20 minute flight from Providenciales, Grand Turk remains the second most popular tourist island for divers in particular as well as those just wishing to enjoy relaxing on an island steeped in history and surrounded by white sand beaches.

The capital island boasts the TCI’s Community College campus, offering employers a good resource of employees from across the region, trained in everything from engineering to I.T., from hospitality to economics.

The business community on the island has its own chamber of commerce and is actively involved in participating in the year-round calendar of events. The highlight of the year’s events is the Heineken Gamefishing Tournament, which takes place in July / August each year and has grown in size dramatically over the last few years. The tournament features fishing, beach parties, tournaments and auctions.

Another popular event is the Conch Carnival which sees local hoteliers, watersports operators and community groups collaborate in a series of events including the celebrated Iron Divemaster Competition, which attracts divemasters from TCI and far beyond to the shores of Grand Turk to compete for the title. The success of events and the spirit of partnership that exists on this small historical and political centre is indicative of
the positive relationship that exists between the private and public sectors.

Grand Turk used to be the economic hub of the Turks and Caicos Islands, with a successful and revered salt industry. Now once again, Grand Turk looks to be at the heart of a new economically prosperous era with public sector investment increasing and private sector interest on a sharp incline.

Accommodation providers have enjoyed success on this island for several years. Major condominium development has begun to create additional capacity required for international air carriers to consider non-stop flights to Grand Turk.

The new airport with state of the art facilities is the pride of the nation and is enticing airlines wishing to expand their services to TCI. The multi-million dollar Carnival Cruise ship development is set to put Grand Turk on the tourism and investment map.

The facilities, the Government base, the historic centre and the professional and skilled labour force demonstrate that tourism is not the only opportunity to be explored. Retail, construction, light manufacturing, medical services, insurance, software, communications and many other businesses could thrive, as the economy is set to take a dramatic upturn.

With all of this good news it is hardly any wonder that business pioneers, like Columbus during his discovery of the New World in 1492 who reputedly landed on Grand Turk, are eager to discover more about this island.
